As anticipated, London Progress claimed its 10th consecutive Premier British League title at the weekend at the Ormesby Club in Middlesbrough, a fitting location given Ormesby’s own impressive record in the past. Jason Sugrue, as he has done for the past ten years, led an unbelievably strong Progress team to glory dismissing their three opponents 8-0, 8-0, 8-0. Having already claimed a virtual clean sweep in their local leagues, it just remains for London Progress to try a win the Women’s British League for a second year running, thus achieving another remarkable season. The club will have to wait until June to see if they can overcome a very powerful Irish Ladies team but whatever the result, London Progress can already bask in the sunshine of their outstanding decade of achievement.

London Progress youngsters earned three places at the National Trials this weekend in Derby and all three put in very impressive performances. Rammone Campbell won five out of seven games in his very difficult group and only failed to reach the quarter finals on a cruel countback. Charleigh Kirby won all her group games and her quarter final match and only stumbled at the semi final stage in the fifth deciding game. But perhaps most impressive of all was young Marcus Giles who,at the tender age of nine, won all seven of his group games in a very challenging group of eight. Is Marcus to be the next London Progress superstar? Based on this performance you would not bet against him going all the way to the top!

Having now completed what is probably a never-to-be repeated British sporting first, ( ten consecutive British titles) London Progress are now embarking on discussions to lay the foundations for another decade of sporting success. The inner circle of London Progress, a wonderful collection of table tennis enthusiasts, many of whom trace their Progress roots back two decades, will debate how to take the Progress project to a new and dynamic dimension. Whatever the outcome of these discussions what is certain is that Progress will always define success as an amalgam of total community inclusion with clear and accessible pathways to elite performance. One without the other would simply not be the Progress way. More details to follow shortly.
