Interview with Charlie Childs - Part 1
This interview with Charlie Childs was conducted using email between 20th and 25th December 2006.

Charlie Childs, is Director of the TTLinks. He is responsible for brokering the sponsorship deal with London Progress.

Tell us about yourself. Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Charlie Childs. I am an Ex Ordnance Survey Project Manager / Marketing Director (for 33 years) Age: Old. I am based in Fareham (Hants) and am from a very large family. I recently retired as a Non Executive Director with the local NHS after a four-year term.

You recently signed a huge sponsorship deal with London Progress. What do you hope the sponsorship deal between London Progress and TT Links will achieve?

It will achieve a greater awareness of Chinese Table Tennis products and specifically the Double Happiness company which is the largest manufacturer of Table Tennis equipment in the world. The sponsorship will provide TT people with more choice other than traditional European product which is especially expensive in the UK. We wanted to provide support at grass roots level of the sport for a community based club. London Progress is a large club with good networks links into the multi-cultural London community that will facilitate TTLinks greater promotion.

What path has led you to where you are today?
I was lucky when I worked for Ordnance Survey that I could work in many disciplines (Draughtsman, Marketing and sales, Software Development and Project Manager). These skills are transferable to Table Tennis - whether they be Coaching, running a club or running a TT business. I have been involved for 30 years in coaching at local and regional level. I also help run a club called Generation 2 in Fareham. As a club we have had some success in TT - recently beating LP in British League Div 2 - sorry couldn't resist that one. Starting the business was simply an extension of all those things and a visit to watch the Pro Tour Finals in China a couple of years ago.

" Double Happiness tables and balls have been used at all major international competitions for many years and that includes the Olympics. "

What prompted you to start TT Links? When did TT Links come into being?
For TTLinks, the meeting in 1996 with Tong Feiming (English Open Winner) and a gradual forming over time of a business idea with China as its base. It seemed strange that Chinese Table Tennis equipment was not available to UK players and clubs when Chinese players were using it to great effect on the international stage.
Who are your competitors and how do you intend to increase your share of the market?
There are several established competitors in UK Table Tennis who have traditionally shared the cake with TeesSport and Bribar taking the largest slices. The agreements that we have with Double Happiness and Double Fish are long-term and allow us to bring high-quality Table Tennis products to the UK which is not readily available. Double Happiness and Double Fish provide high quality products that are realistically priced and are alternatives to the higher priced products generally available.

What sorts of links do you have with China? Who are your other partners and what are their strengths?
TTLinks have forged many links with other businesses in China which in time will be of great benefit to us. We have links with major suppliers of Table Tennis equipment as well as Clothing and manufacturing. Table Tennis equipment supply is not our only business. Tong Feiming is my business partner in the company. I manage the UK end of the business and Tong manages the China end.
